The chime of the doorbell surprised me. My brow furrowed as Sam strolled over to open the door. Maybe Bella changed her mind and decided to stay home. A man could dream, right?
âWe missed her? Stupid traffic!â My mother burst through the door, followed by my sister Jessica.
âDonât worry, Jenn, I took a few pictures.â
My mother rushed over to me. âHello, sweetheart!â
âHey, mom.â I kissed her cheek. âWhat are you guys doing here? This is a long ride from upstate just to see Bella dressed up.â
âDoing you a favor, big brother.â Jessica smirked at me. âMom is staying at my apartment tonight, and weâre taking Joey.â
My eyes grew wide. âYou are?â
Joey rushed down the stairs at the sound of his grandmotherâs voice and almost knocked her over.
âSamantha asked if Iâd like to take Joey for a night. And Bella will be sleeping at a friendâs house, you two can finally have a little alone time. Iâm staying with Jessica so I donât have to go all the way back home. Weâll just drive over the bridge to the Bronx for the night.â
âWait!â I narrowed my eyes and turned to my sister. My neat freak, everything labeled, serial killer-organized sister who somehow agreed to take in a toddler for the night.
Jessica shrugged. âThe holiday spirit overtook me, I guess.â She huffed and squinted her eyes at me. âAnd donât look at me like that. You know I love that kid.â
I chuckled and nodded. âYes, Jess. I know you love your nephew. The mess heâs going to make, Iâm not so sureâ
âI already told her Iâd take care of clean up,â Mom interrupted. âAnd if she gets upset at the mess she can go in the corner and have a drink or something. Iâve been dying to have my grandson overnight and she knows that. Donât you, dear?â
She let out a defeated sigh. âYes, I know that, Mom. Weâll be fine and bring him back tomorrow afternoon.â
âAre you all packed for Aunt Jessicaâs tonight?â Mom pulled Joey onto her lap on the couch as he vehemently shook his head. I shouldâve known it wouldnât be that easy.
âI stay with Mommy.â
âWhat if I told you that Santa came to my house early with some of your presents, and you can open them when we get to Aunt Jessicaâs? I think he left some big ones.â My mother pulled out the heavy artillery tonight, and Iâd never loved her more.
Joeyâs eyes lit up, and her plan worked like a charm. Sam handed her his Batman backpack and a huge bag of his favorite toys. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Jessica cringe and I fought a laugh. I was grateful to my sister, but damn if it wasnât funny as hell to think of her trying to keep a level head while my Tasmanian devil son tore through her pristine apartment.
We kissed them all goodnight and my mother ran to the car with her grandson. After I turned the lock, I leaned back against the door and shut my eyes.
